Family Counselor (2 Positions)

Position Summary: This position requires a strong commitment to provide services for families whose children are at risk of placement, or where children in placement may be returned more expeditiously if such services are provided.

Major Responsibilities/Activities:

  • Assess family needs in order to establish stable functioning and a safe environment
  • With the parents, develop a plan to encourage and strengthen a meaningful relationship between the parents and children
  • Provide individual and family counseling as needed
  • Retain up to date case records and progress notes on Connections in accordance with NYS regulations
  • Engage in regular contact with the referral source and coordinate with other agencies and community service providers
  • Plan and arrange for case conferences and service plan reviews
  • Function as a member of the PS team, attend weekly meetings, offer expertise and resources, and actively participate in case conferences
  • Maintain casework contacts as mandated by county regulations, a minimum of two contacts with family members especially all the children
  • Models and practices sensitivity, fair treatment and acceptance of diversity in all interpersonal interactions
  • Shows willingness to learn about and implement skills related to diversity
  • Participates and contributes to program Quality Improvement process.
  • Must maintain and submit all of the required documents and comply with all aspects of the Vehicle Safety and Usage Policy.
  • Possess a working knowledge of the Anasazi software.
  • Utilize Agency phone and email systems following standard customer services protocol. This includes: answering the telephone in a timely and professional manner, directing calls appropriately and returning phone and email requests promptly. Demonstrate excellent phone etiquette and customer service skills. Also demonstrate knowledge of agency programs and services.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with program staff and others within the agency. Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills during interactions with internal and external customers.

  • Minimum Requirements:
  • MSW preferred, or Bachelor of Social Work or related degree plus experience
  • Possess a valid NYS Drivers License and continued automobile insurance
  • Computer literacy, good organization and writing skills
  • Ability to have a flexible schedule to accommodate clients

  • Desired Qualifications:
  • Bi-lingual skills
  • Cultural competency
  • Familiarity with issues of mental health, substance abuse and domestic violence

  • Essential Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently move about inside and outside the office in reaction to situations and duties.
  • Frequently communicate accurate information with coworkers, clients and children who will use the agency services.
  • Frequently operate a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, printer and phone system.
  • Must be able to access multi-level buildings and travel to sites within the community.

  • Essential Mental Requirements:
  • Must be able to understand the written and spoken word and respond effectively during the majority of time spent on the job;
  • Must be able to learn and comprehend basic instructions and orientation to job;
  • Must be able to multi-task on a frequent basis;
  • Frequently participate and coordinate with others regarding work situations and decisions;
  • Frequently interact appropriately and diplomatically with varied stakeholders such as volunteers, staff members, visitors, referral sources, etc.
