Child and Family Services is the proud recipient of grants from private and corporate
foundations throughout Western New York. These grants are vital to a variety of
our programs that change the lives of thousands of at-risk children and families
served by our organization each year. Child & Family Services gratefully acknowledges
the generosity of the following foundations for grants awarded this year in support
our agency’s mission:
FIRST NIAGARA BANK
First Niagara has awarded a $3,000 grant to the Ways to Work Program serving Erie
and Niagara Counties. Funds will enable the program to provide low- interest loans
to qualified applicants who have been denied traditional lines of credit.
more Loans are used to purchase or repair vehicles,
cover rent or security deposits, provide childcare, continue education or purchase
equipment necessary for business purposes. The grant will also fund financial literacy
workshops for loan recipients and the general public.
THE GRIGG LEWIS FOUNDATION, INC.
The Grigg Lewis Foundation, Inc. awarded the Ways to Work Loan Program a grant of
$43,000 to facilitate the program’s expansion into Niagara County, enabling the
program to provide low-interest loans to qualified residents who have been denied
conventional lines of credit. more
The loans cover essential expenses including vehicle
purchase or repair, helping low-income individuals to remain in school or on the
job. Child & Family Services’ Ways to Work Loan program also serves qualified residents
of Erie County.
EVANS BANK, N.A.
Evans Bank, N.A. has awarded a $2,000 grant to the Ways to Work Program serving
Erie County. Funds will enable the program to provide low- interest loans to qualified

Junior League of Buffalo
The Junior League of Buffalo donated a $1,000 grant to fund the Haven House Academic
Scholarship Program. Funds will provide scholarship awards to Haven House clients
to cover a variety of education-related expenses including text books, tuition fees,
licensing/certification fees, transportation, childcare and school supplies.

survivors of domestic violence rebuild their lives by providing the funding needed
to continue their education.
The Fatta Foundation
The Fatta Foundation awarded a grant of $1,000 to Child & Family Services’ Haven
House, Erie County’s only licensed domestic violence shelter. Funds will help Haven
House continue to provide life-saving services to individuals and children escaping
domestic violence situations. more
Through direct services such as a 24-hour hotline,
emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, transitional housing and more, Haven
House works to ensure that all relationships embrace the principles of peace, respect
and equality.
Walmart Store #5027 – Lancaster location
Walmart Store #5027 – Lancaster location awarded a $1,000 grant to Child & Family
Services’ Family Mental Health Program. The Family Mental Health Program provides
counseling, guidance and support for children, individuals and families at three
locations throughout the Buffalo area. more
Funds will help the program meet the increased
need for mental health counseling in Western New York and will help improve the
lives of those who are struggling with mental health issues.
York Children’s Foundation
The York Children’s Foundation awarded a $500 grant to the agency’s Conners Children’s
Center in support of a therapeutic playground project. The grant will help fund
a specially designed sensory integration playground which will help improve the
quality of life for boys and girls living at the center.

happy, healthy and productive members of the community.
Walmart Store #2586 – Cheektowaga location
Walmart Store #2586 – Cheektowaga location awarded a $250 grant to Child & Family
Services’ Family Mental Health Program. The Family Mental Health Program provides
counseling, guidance and support to children, individuals and families to help them
take control of their lives and build brighter futures.
more Funds will help the program meet the increased
need for mental health counseling in Western New York and will help improve the

The Seymour H. Knox Foundation
The Seymour H. Knox Foundation awarded a grant of $500 to help support services
provided through the agency’s Children’s Mental Health Services, Haven House Economic
Empowerment Program and Senior Companion Program. Children’s Mental Health Services
provides outpatient counseling and mental health services for children and their
families at three locations in the Buffalo area.
more The Haven House Economic Empowerment Program
provides financial information to domestic violence survivors through resource guides,
educational groups, one-on-one coaching sessions and financial needs clinics, to
help them establish stability and self-sufficiency. The Senior Companion Program
trains senior volunteers who are paired with elderly individuals with developmental
or physical disabilities to provide company and basic assistance with daily activities.
Regal Entertainment Group
The Regal Entertainment Group awarded Child & Family Services’ Conners Children’s
Center a $2,700 grant to fund Therapeutic Recreation activities for the boys and
girls living the Center. Funds will be used toward activities including roller skating,
bowling, swimming and fishing trips. more
Therapeutic Recreation activities help children
with special needs, like those served by Conners Children’s Center, develop vital
life skills and increase their self-esteem through a structured use of leisure time.
John R. Oishei Foundation
The John R. Oishei Foundation awarded Haven House, Erie County’s only licensed domestic
violence shelter, a grant of $6,500 to help change the lives of individuals and
children in the community seeking refuge from domestic violence.
more The funds will enable Haven House to continue
providing life-saving shelter, transitional housing, counseling, legal advocacy,
economic empowerment courses and other vital services to help individuals on the
path to building lives free from violence.
Norman E. Mack, II Fund at the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo
The Norman E. Mack, II Fund at the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo awarded
a grant of $5,200 to Child & Family Services in general support of the agency. more
Funds will help support the agency’s 30+ life-changing programs and services offered
throughout the Western New York Community. This first-time gift from the Fund served
as a matching gift which enabled the agency to secure additional funds from another
charitable foundation.
William E. and Ann L. Swan Foundation
The William E. and Ann L. Swan Foundation awarded a grant of $3,000 to Child & Family
Services in general support of the agency. Funds will help support the agency’s
30+ programs and services throughout Western New York.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western New York
Ronald McDonald House Charities awarded Conners Children’s Center and The Closing
the Gap Initiative at Hillery Park Elementary School a $2,765 grant in support of
year-round Therapeutic Recreation initiatives.
more Children in these programs display a variety
of social, emotional and/or academic issues, often due to severe abuse, neglect
and/or poverty. The grant will enhance the quality of life for these children by
providing therapeutic recreation activities, such as camping and outdoor games,
which are proven to help children with special needs build social and motor skills,
strengthen peer relationships, develop self-esteem and self-control, and learn important
life-skills.
Paul J. Koessler Foundation
The Paul J. Koessler Foundation awarded Child & Family Services’ Conners Children’s
Center a grant of $5,000. The grant will help fund an art therapy program and a
weekly recreation program for boys and girls living at the Center.
more Through art therapy, children are empowered
to express their emotions and discuss difficult topics, which play a vital role
in children’s healing and well-being. Conners Children’s Center provides individualized
care and therapeutic services for children who have been diagnosed as severely emotionally
disturbed.
Rich Family Foundation
The Rich Family Foundation awarded a grant of $1,600 to Child & Family Services’
Bullying Prevention Program. Funds will help enable two staff members to be certified
as trainers in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.
more Olweus certification is a two-year process
and is considered the “best practice” strategy for addressing and preventing bullying
in school settings. Certification will enable staff to reach out to local schools
to provide bullying prevention services as needed.
The Josephine Goodyear Foundation Fund
The Josephine Goodyear Foundation Fund awarded the agency a grant of $5,000 to fund
programming at Conners Children’s Center, one of the agency’s residential treatment
facilities. more The grant will enable Conners Children’s Center to continue providing
housing and 24-hour care and support services for up to 30 boys and girls ages 6
to 16. The highly-trained staff at Conners Children’s Center provides individualized
care and therapeutic treatment to help these youth build fundamental life skills
and become happy, healthy and productive members of our community.
James H. Cummings Foundation, Inc
The James H. Cummings Foundation, Inc. awarded a grant of $10,000 to Child & Family
Services to fund the replacement of storm windows at the agency’s Fitzmorris House.

The Fitzmorris House is home to seven boys, ages 12 to 14, who are served by the
agency’s Conners Children’s Center Residential Treatment Program. Fitzmorris House
(circa 1880) is located in the Delaware Avenue Historic District and is part of
the agency’s historic Delaware Avenue campus.
The DreamCatcher Foundation, Inc.
The DreamCatcher Foundation, Inc. awarded the agency’s Conners Children’s Center
a grant of $1,500 to be used towards the purchase of new furniture for homework
spaces and living areas at the facility.
more Replacement furnishings will be highly-durable,
crate-style items which are designed to better withstand continued use by children
with special emotional, physical and behavioral needs. Replacing the damaged furnishings
with new, well-maintained pieces will help create a home-like, calming environment
for the children who call the facility home.
Fisher-Price
Fisher-Price has donated 100 toys to benefit the children served by Child & Family
Services. The toys will be used by children in the Foster Care and Adoption Program
in on-site family visitation rooms. more
These toys fulfill the need for high-quality, safe
toys for boys and girls in the Foster Care and Adoption Program, who come from backgrounds
of severe poverty, abuse and/or neglect, and often come into the program with nothing
more than the clothing they are wearing.
Evans Devereux Memorial Fund
The Evans Devereux Memorial Fund has awarded the agency’s Senior Companion Program
a grant of $3,000. The Senior Companion Program pairs trained senior
more companion volunteers with at-risk elderly
individuals to provide friendly visiting, care and assistance with daily routines.
Specifically, the Evans Devereux Memorial Fund’s gift will fund volunteer recruitment
and background checks, first aid/emergency kits for volunteers and clients, volunteer
training, educational resource materials and more.
Clement & Karen Arrison Family Charitable Foundation
The Clement & Karen Arrison Family Charitable Foundation awarded the Stanly G. Falk
School a grant of $1,000 to purchase instruments for the school’s drumming program.

The new instruments make it possible for more children to participate in the Falk
School’s Cambridge location music program. Children at the Stanley G. Falk School
face many challenges because of their intense emotional and behavioral problems
resulting from trauma they endured in their young lives, and access to musical education
is one of many activities proven to help children with special needs develop vital
motor skills, gain self-confidence and succeed academically.
The Children’s Foundation of Erie County
The Children’s Foundation of Erie County awarded the agency a grant of $5,000 to
fund programming at Conners Children’s Center, one of the agency’s group homes.

The grant will enable Conners Children’s Center to continue providing housing and
24-hour care and support services for up to 30 boys and girls ages 6 to 16. The
highly-trained staff at Conners Children’s Center provides individualized care and
therapeutic treatment to help these youth build fundamental life skills and become

Garden Walk Buffalo, Inc.
Garden Walk Buffalo, Inc. awarded Conners Children’s Center a grant of $1,000 to
fund landscaping and gardening activities at the 824 Delaware Campus.
more The specific plant species chosen were
done so in accordance with the historical significance of the 824 Delaware Avenue
property. Completion of phase two of the landscape project will create landscape
unity amongst all three Delaware Avenue mansions.
George G. and Elizabeth G. Smith Foundation
The George G. and Elizabeth G. Smith Foundation awarded a grant of $8,000 to Child
& Family Services’ Bullying Prevention Program.

The Children’s Guild Foundation
The Children’s Guild Foundation, Inc. awarded a grant of $17,450 to fund the Moving
Miracles dance program for children in our residential treatment programs, and recreation
activities for students at the Stanley G. Falk School.
more The Moving Miracles dance program is the
only nationally recognized performing arts program of its kind in Western New York,
serving children, adolescents and adults with special needs through the healing
of music and dance. Students at the Stanley G. Falk School will attend athletic
camps throughout the summer of 2012. Through participation in these camps, student
athletes expand their social skills, learn self-control and compete against non-disabled
peers. For many of these children, programs such as these are the first time they
have experienced activities that other youth enjoy on a regular basis.
The Baird Foundation
The Baird Foundation awarded a $7,500 grant to support Child & Family Services’
historic Richmond/Lockwood Mansion restoration project.
more The Baird Foundation’s support of this
grant helped Child & Family Services to leverage the $100,000 New York State Environmental
Protection Fund grant. The restoration project will preserve portions of the landmark
English Tudor mansion located at 844 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, helping prevent
further deterioration to one of Buffalo’s architectural gems. Specifically, the
grant will help fund construction to aid in stabilizing, repairing, and rebuilding
the back patio.
East Hill Foundation
The East Hill Foundation recently awarded the agency’s Conners Children’s Center
Residential Treatment more Facility (RTF) a grant of $20,000.The funds provided new beds & bedroom
furniture for the Center, helping to meet some of the most basic needs of the children
who call the facility home. The Conners RTF Program provides therapeutic counseling
& treatment in a residential setting for boys & girls, ages 6 to 14, who exhibit
emotional and/or behavioral problems.
The Grigg Lewis Foundation

to facilitate the program’s more recent expansion into Niagara County, enabling the

also serves qualified residents of Erie and Wyoming counties.
HSBC Bank USA
The HSBC Bank USA, N.A., Community Development Department recently awarded a grant
of $10,000 to the agency’s Ways to Work Loan Program.The funds will enable the program
to continue providing low-interest loans to
more qualified individuals living in Erie, Niagara
and Wyoming counties throughout the coming year. The loans provided are used to
cover expenses including vehicle purchase or repair, rent and/or security deposits
to move to safer neighborhoods, child care, or personal business equipment, helping
low-income individuals maintain employment or attend school.
The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo
The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo has awarded a $25,000 grant to the
Mary Talbert Center. The grant funds will enable the Mary Talbert Center to continue
offering children’s mental health counseling services. The Center, located at 1325
Main Street in Buffalo, more specializes in treating mental health issues experienced
by youth and adolescents, and provides affordable outpatient counseling services
to children and their families throughout Erie County.
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
Child and Family Services will embark on a landmark construction project thanks
to a financial boost from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic
Preservation. A $100,000 grant was awarded to Child and Family Services through
the New York State Environmental Protection Fund to preserve portions of the landmark

English Tudor mansion and prevent further deterioration to one of Buffalo’s architectural
gems. Specifically, the grant will fund construction that will aid in stabilizing,
repairing and rebuilding the back patio. Once this phase of the patio restoration
is completed, Child and Family Services will open the doors of the Richmond Lockwood
mansion to the public for tours, once a month.
Mary Kay Foundation
A $20,000 grant from the Mary Kay Foundation has been awarded to Child and Family
Services’ Haven House to combat domestic violence.
more The grant is part of the Foundation’s annual
$3 million domestic violence grant program; Haven House is one of 150 shelters participating
in this year’s program. The grant will be used to support general operating costs
at the shelter. Unstable economic times have led to a loss in funding and donations;
the Mary Kay grant will help to supplement funds and enable Haven House to meet
the increased demand for services.
M&T Charitable Foundation
M&T Charitable Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Ways to Work Loan
Program. more With this grant, Ways to Work can continue to provide loans to low-income
applicants in Erie and Niagara Counties. Loans are used to purchase or repair vehicles,
cover rent or security deposits, provide childcare, continue education or purchase
equipment necessary for business purposes.
HSBC Bank
HSBC Bank continues its support of the Ways to Work Loan Program in Erie County
and is funding program expansion efforts in Niagara County in 2011.
more With the bank’s support, loans are provided
to working families in Erie and Niagara Counties who cannot access conventional
credit. They are used to purchase or repair vehicles, to cover rent and/or security
deposits to move to safer neighborhoods and prevent homelessness.
The Rich Family Foundation
The Rich Family Foundation has awarded a grant to Child and Family Services making
it possible to involve some of our most challenged and traumatized children living

at the Conners Children’s Center in a therapeutic horseback riding program at the
Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center in Buffalo this summer. This program will increase
the chance of success in the children overcoming the devastating effects of their
trauma and will provide advances in their treatment.
Children’s Guild Foundation
Through a generous grant from the Children’s Guild Foundation, children at Child
& Family Services’ Stanley G. Falk School and Conners Children’s Center are having

the time of their lives this summer! Falk School students are participating in organized
basketball and soccer camp programs at the University at Buffalo and Daemen College
and children living in residential care at Conners Children’s Center are enjoying
day trips to area attractions such as Fantasy Island, the Aquarium of Niagara, and
Adventure Speedway. They are also celebrating summer with special theme parties
such as Pirate Day, Back to the Sea, and the Monster Bash.
Additionally, the foundation has funded a year-round art therapy program for children
at Conners, which has been both fun and effective in helping them to work through
the trauma they have endured.
Metro Mattress
Through the company’s “50- Beds in 50-Days” Charitable Promotion, Metro Mattress
has provided a number of beds for women and children seeking refuge at Child & Family

Services’ Haven House. The women and children living at Haven House are escaping
unimaginable situations of abuse and cruelty at the hands of a loved one. Haven
House is the only licensed domestic violence shelter in Erie County and is often
the only safe place they can turn to flee the abuse and begin rebuilding their lives.
