October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Child & Family Services’ Haven House commemorates this month by remembering those who have lost their lives due to domestic violence and honoring the survivors and those still seeking safety.

“Shine the Light” on domestic violence awareness is a statewide and local initiative aimed at raising awareness on domestic violence prevention. Haven House has been at the forefront of these efforts throughout the past decade and will be during October. Child & Family Services will host a press conference and “Shine the Light” event on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at Broderick Park as we light the Peace Bridge in purple. During the conference, advocates against domestic violence, both professionally and personally, will speak about their work in the field and share their personal stories.

Every year, New Yorkers are asked to participate in the domestic violence awareness effort by dressing in purple, the color that represents this social effort. This day will happen on Wednesday, October 20, 2016. In addition, well-known structures and buildings will be illuminated such as the Empire State Building, the Electric Tower here in Buffalo and the Peace Bridge.
