Haven House commemorated October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month with their annual Lighting the Falls Purple press conference and ceremony on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 in Niagara Falls, NY. We were proud to welcome Congressman Brian Higgins, representing the 26th Congressional District, Congressman Higgins spoke on the importance of domestic violence prevention and the work that is done at Haven House. A special art project, called “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” was on display at the event hand-crafted by women and children seeking shelter and counseling at Haven House.
Other speakers of the event included: Christopher Janicki-Howe, a child witness of domestic violence; Remla Parthasarathy, Erie County's Coalition Against Family Violence; Shannon Howley, Juris Doctorate Candidate representing the "Domestic Violence Task Force" at the UB School of Law; and Katey Joyce, Director of the Office of Domestic Violence Prevention at Haven House. Both Niagara Falls and the Peace Bridge were illuminated in a purple light to symbolize domestic violence awareness.
