About the Anger Management Program

The program provides youth struggling with anger management an opportunity to gain insight into their difficulties while learning skills to appropriately deal with anger. The program encourages youth who participate to accept responsibility for what they’ve done and avoid harmful behaviors in the future. This program operates under the Restorative Justice philosophy.

  • Youth exhibiting aggressive behaviors (physical and/or aggressive);
  • Services youth ages 13-21 and residents of Erie County;
  • Cost is $60 per session. Some Medicaid plans accepted.

Goals of the Anger Management Program

Child & Family Services’ Anger Management Program deflects young offenders from the criminal justice system and discourages them from becoming repeat offenders.

How Program Works

Individual Therapy

Participants referred to the program attend an 8-week counseling program consisting of individual sessions which meet for one hour each week, and are conducted by a professional therapist from Child & Family Services. Discussions are designed to assist participants in understanding and taking responsibility for their personal struggles with anger management. Through the sessions, participants work to identify their anger triggers and rehearse appropriate responses to anger. Forgiveness, domestic violence, and relapse prevention are also discussed, among other topics.

Family Participation

Because anger management difficulties may present a family crisis, the family is also part of the program. All family members, including the program participant, meet with the therapist in a family session to discuss the program. The parents’ perspective is invaluable to the successful outcome of the program. If needed, appropriate linkages to on-going individual or family counseling are provided.

Who is eligible for the Anger Management Program?

The program is open to young adults from 13 to 21 years of age who are residents of Erie County. Youth are referred to the Anger Management Workshops as the result of incidents related to anger management, such as harassment, assault, trespassing and destruction of property.
