The Child & Family Services Preventive Services Program works with families
to prevent placement of children out of their homes and to expedite the return of
children to their families when placement in foster case has been necessary.
The Preventive Services Program is considered to be a traditional, comprehensive
program. Each family is assigned to a counselor who - utilizing a family systems,
solution focused approach - assists families in solving problems, learning new ways
of coping, and identifying other needed services. A majority of the service occurs
in the family's home, however some counseling sessions and group sessions will occur
in one of several Child & Family Services offices.
The family counselor can link families with our Preventive Services Parenting Program,
Domestic Violence Treatment Programs, and any of the other services that are available
through the agency. For Spanish-speaking clients, we have family counselors who
are bilingual and have expertise in working with Hispanic families.
Referrals are made by the Erie County Department of Social Services, who sends a
B-2195 referral form to the Director of Preventive Services. The referral is then
assigned to an appropriate family counselor.
