Volunteer Information: Do's and Dont's
A Senior Companion CAN:
- Abide by the rules regarding the right to privacy in the client’s best interest
- Report any environmental, security or client health endangerment
- Do Light shopping and errands (with or without client)
- Do Light cooking and housekeeping for client only
- Read and write letters
- Accompany the client to doctor’s appointments
- Escort the client to recreation or senior center activities or a nutrition site
- Remind the client to take medications
- Perform friendly visitations
- Help client apply for services
- Senior Companion must dress appropriately for work assignment.
A Senior Companion CANNOT:
- Inform others of client’s confidential information
- Smoke inside client’s home
- Drink alcohol or take non-prescription drugs while on duty.
- Administer medications or injections
- Give funds (money) to clients
- Deposit cash in banks
- Wash windows
- Shovel snow or mow the lawn
- Wash and carry heavy loads of laundry
- Major shopping or house cleaning
- Lift a client or heavy items
- Clean up after relatives or guests of client
- Prepare food for persons other than client
- Lead group recreational or social activities
- Implement activities usually performed by doctors, nurses, aides or staff
- Change client’s dirty and/or soiled undergarments or dependables
- Dump or clean portable potties
- Perform Station Supervisors duties or agency clerical duties
