Wheels for Work

The Child & Family Services Wheels for Work Program provides loans to low income families of Erie County who are in need of transportation to get to their jobs. The loans can be used for vehicle repair or to purchase vehicles that have been donated to the program.

Who Is Eligible To Apply?

You qualify for a loan if you are:

  • A resident of Wyoming County;
  • A member of a family that includes a minor child under the age of 18; or have a child under age 19 attending a secondary school or its equivalent. If a non-custodial parent, a child support order is established if the custodial parent has requested child support services from the district;
  • Your TANF eligible or gross family unit income does not exceed 200% of the federal poverty guidelines and you are unable to access conventional credit; and if
  • Working at least 20 hours per week for 3 months.

Loans are serviced by First Niagara Bank, and timely monthly payments develop positive credit histories, helping families to reach their financial goals. The program offers members of the community the opportunity to help working families as they transition from welfare to work. The New Yor State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance funds this innovative program designed to provide reliable transportation to working families.

How Can I Apply?

  • Call to register for a live orientation or participate online.
  • Complete the application and schedule an intake appointment. There is a $20.00 fee due at time of application/intake. Payment is accepted in the form of a certified check or money order.
  • The program staff will assist with the preparation and update of the application as information becomes available.
  • Your application will be reviewed by a loan committee which will approve loans based upon the eligibility criteria.
  • We'll notify you when a decision is made.
  • If your loan is approved, we'll request any additional information needed to finalize your loan.
  • The servicing bank will notify you and arrange payment of your loan.
  • Your loan check will be made payable to you and to the auto dealer, school, day care center or other appropriate vendor.

As an incentive loan recipients who demonstrate three consecutive months of timely payments are provided a $100 gift card until funds are exhausted.
